Climbing the local classic:
Monkey Hang 5.9 at Deer's Leap

Rock Climbing Courses:
  • Rock 101: The first step in learning how to rock climb.  This course teaches participants the fundamental skills needed to participate in top rope climbing. Students will learn how to tie into the climbing rope, how to belay another climber on top rope, how to properly anchor themselves while belaying, and basic climbing technique such as footwork and balance.  Climbing safety will constantly be stressed during this course.
  • Rock 201: The next step in improving your climbing skills and technical knowledge.   Students will learn to build top rope anchors using natural protection: i.e., trees, boulders, and natural features of the rock. Artificial protection placement will also be addressed in the course.  Students will also explore rappelling methods.  After completing Rock 201, successful students should be competent climbing on their own on single pitch top rope sites. (Rock 201 is a two-three day course)
  • Rock 301: This course educates students on proper methods of seconding a leader, removing and re-racking protection, transitions at hanging/multi-pitch anchors, and multi-pitch rappelling.  Prerequisite of Rock 201 or the equivalent required.
  • Rock 401: An advanced climbing course designed to teach students in the use of artificial protection to build anchors and protect the leader. This course can be taken in a 2-3 day format. Upon completion of this course students should be comfortable leading multi-pitch rock climbs within their ability level. Discipline and efficiency will be stressed during this course. Prerequisite of Rock 301 or the equivalent required.
  • Climbing Technique and Movement on Rock: This course addresses physical movement, balance, equipment, and technique on both crack and face climbs of all angles.  Minimal technical rope skills are involved in this course, allowing students to focus on improving their climbing technique.  Rates are the same as for private guiding. The student to instructor ratio is kept low (3:1) to allow time to be focused on your individual skills.
  • Self-Rescue:This course breaks the complex, confusing system of self-rescue down into five categories:  Escaping the belay, load transfers, lowering systems, raising systems, and miscellaneous skills such as knot passes. Even gym climbers can benefit from these skills. Many climbers do not value these self rescue skills, brushing them off in hopes they will improvise something they once saw in a book.  We feel very strongly that these are invaluable skills that every climber, top roper and leaders alike should master and practice on a regular basis.  Rates are the same as for private guiding.  We suggest you take this course in one to three days, depending on your level of experience and knowledge. (We will evaluate your skills on the first day).  We will ensure you have a low (2:1) student to instructor ratio.
  • Adventure Racing Rope Skills Clinic: Most adventure races have slightly different requirements, so this course is designed around your needs and requirements. The standard clinic is a full day, and consists of rappelling over varied terrain (overhangs, vertical faces, slabs), ascending a fixed rope on varied terrain, knot passes, and some self-rescue. We will practice the skills enough to have you moving confidently and efficiently. The rates are the same as for private guiding. We will ensure you have a low (3:1) student to instruction ratio.Click here for information on our certifications. Shorter versions of this course, as well as skills checks are also available upon request.

Top Rope Climbing at Deer's Leap

Group Climbing Programs:*

When top roping, the rope runs from the climber, up to an anchor at the top of the cliff, and back down to the belayer (safety person holding the rope). The belayer keeps the rope taught while you climb. This way, if you slip, you never fall more then a few inches. Top Roping is a great way to safety and confidently learn the skills to get you to the top.

Harness, Helmet, and Climbing shoes are included. We will keep the student to guide ratio no larger than 5:1. Groups are limited to 10 in size, call for larger groups. Please call at least a week in advance to book your group.

*"Groups" are limited to school, church, scouting, or other non-profit groups. All other groups, please see private guiding prices, listed above.
